DECISION

The current version of capitalism is the capitalism of choice. We want to choose in order not to decide. The subject finds itself faced with countless options; choosing among them is what capitalism passes off as freedom. Freedom under capitalism is freedom to choose. But a decision breaks with the system of given options. Decisio cuts through the texture of options, which is another name for the reality of facts. Today, reality presents itself as a system of choices. To decide, on the other hand, means not to choose from the given choices. It means placing the system of choice in question by choosing an (im)possibility that it has declared impossible. With every choice, the subject confirms the established texture of reality; with every decision the subject suspends it. Krisis is the ancient Greek word for decision as well as the situation that arises after a decision has been made. Today, the subject has been reduced to a consumer of choices. It negotiates its daily reality by choosing among the given alternatives. Thus, it ratifies the constituted sociopolitical reality. A decision opposes this reality. It opposes the instituted order through critical openness to its inconsistency and arbitrariness. While the subject stabilizes the given world order with each choice, deciding means importing disorder into it. But this import is not transport to the outside. Chaos already belongs to the order of facts as its implicit truth. That is the ideology-critical element of decision: to refuse to be enslaved to the world of facts, closing one’s mind to their truth, as every subject necessarily does in the act of choosing.
